Introduction to Kant's Anthropology from a pragmatic point of view (French original: Introduction à l' Anthropologie de Kant. Thèse complémentaire pour le doctorat dès lettres) |
Publishing information |
Not published in print in any language, a shorter version of my translation is currently available online in English. |
Brief description of project's scope and content |
The text is a translation of Michel Foucault's Complementary Dissertation on Kant's Anthropology from a pragmatic point of view , presented as his doctoral thesis in 1961. Foucault translated Kant's text into French for Libraire Philosophique J. Vrin ( Paris : 1964), but this introduction was never published. It is now held at the Foucault Archive in Paris at the at the Institut de Mémoires de l'Edition Contemporaine (IMEC {D60/D61}). A much shorter version presenting the intellectual context in which Kant elaborated his views on anthropology was published as the Introduction to Foucault's translation in the Vrin edition of Kant's Anthropology . The rest of the text remains unpublished and in my view underestimated. It is not only a scholarly appreciation of Kant's oeuvre as a whole, but also the first outline of an explicit relation between what would later become Foucault's main conceptual problematique and the history of philosophy as innovated by Kant. |
Proposed Content |
Attached is a provisional introduction. |
Market |
This small volume will be of most interest to students, researchers and scholars of Kant and Foucault, and is likely to be used as a textbook in undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Kant's philosophy, recent social theory, psychology and anthropology. Secondary markets will be academic libraries, the Fond Foucault at IMEC and major bookstores. |
Competition |
There are no other monographs of note on Kant's Anthropology , and no other writings by Foucault that deal with Kant's critical philosophy in such depth. There have been numerous publications of Foucault's reading of Kant's answer to the Enlightenment question. These were the object of great academic interest and contributed to situate Foucault's oeuvre within a Kantian ambit. The proposed publication is a definite statement on Foucault's relation to Kant and his place in the critical tradition of philosophy. |
Additional Information |
The French original manuscript is 28,000 words long (174,000 characters). So far 22,000 words have been rendered into English, and the translator has compiled a provisional introduction of 3,000 words. The translation will be completed on receipt of an offer from a publisher. Colin Gordon has offered to revise the completed translation. The text has not been published in French. An idea could be to publish the French in parallel with the English version. A feasible deadline for completing the translation is three months from receipt of publisher's commitment. The translator does not require payment for the work, so long as part of the text remains available on the website www.generation-online.org where it was first published, which would serve as the best platform from which to advertise its unabridged print publication. |

The linguistic turn of the economy and its effects on politics |
Publishing information |

Brief description of project's scope and content |
The book is an investigation of the transition to Postfordism in political economy. It analyses the model of lean production and its applications to the knowledge industry and provides great insights into the innovations of politics and national administrations that resulted from social policies implemented to increase labour productivity. This is a must read for all those interested in the new economy and class composition, and the changes they underwent in the past two decades. |
Proposed Contents |
1. Introduction; 2. Back to labour; 3. Rules and measures; 4. State and Market; 5. Postface to the English edition. |
Market |
This text will be appreciated by schools of management, economics and social theory, as well as immaterial labourer around the world. |
Competition |
Despite there being many sociological studies of Postfordism from the point of view of capital's restructuration, Marazzi's contribution is unique due its approachable style and its focus on the political economic aspects of Postfordism in its effects on labour and citizenship. |
Additional Information |
The book is around 33,000 words long. A feasible deadline for submission of the translation is three months from receipt of publisher's commitment. It would be useful to have a contact with the author and discuss the possibility to add E il denaro va. Esodo e rivoluzione dei mercati finanziari (1998). |
